Eternal Forms: Greek Architecture Then and Now

By the time the Greeks came along, they already considered the Egyptians to be ancient history.  However, none of the Greek temples, including the Parthenon, are today as intact as the great Egyptian pyramids.  The Egyptians won their war against time by building "castles of eternity" that survive until this day.  But the Greeks won their war against time in a completely different way.  Few of their buildings remain, but the forms or styles of buildings they created survive until this day.  No one builds pyramids today, but the Greek style of architecture is constantly being built all around us.  By creating these forms, the Greeks and their architecture are more alive today in the West than any other ancient civilization.

"Mighty indeed are the marks and monuments of our empire. Future ages will wonder at us, as the present age wonders at us now." -- Pericles
